Safety Tips

Please reach us at dneely@antillesgas.vi if you have additional question or concerns.

Propane is actually odorless. Ethyl mercaptan is added to the propane to give it that horrible smell of rotten eggs.  This is a safety feature to alert the user that there is a leak, and that immediate action must be taken. Ethyl mercaptan is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the smelliest substance on earth.

Avoid any source of ignition, no flames or sparks.  Do not operate lights, appliances, cellular phones etc. Turn the gas off at the tank. To turn the gas off, turn the valve to the right or clockwise. From outside the house and away from any propane vapor, report the leak to your propane supplier. If necessary, call the fire department at 911. Do not return to the house until your propane supplier determines that it is safe to do so. Have your propane system checked for leaks by a professional. Any repairs should be done by qualified technician.

When you run out of gas, it is very important that all the gas appliances be turned off. This will ensure that there are no open valves when the tanks are either exchanged for new tanks or refilled. Any open valve could cause a major leak and thus cause an explosion or fire, major damage to property, serious injury and loss of life.

Cylinders and tanks should be secured to the building or home in the upright position. The valves should be in the off position (turned all the way to the right or clockwise). Once the storm passes, check the lines and tanks for any damage. If no visible damage, then turn the gas back on. Again, check the lines for any damage or leaks. If you have damage to the lines or tanks turn the gas off and call a professional. Do not attempt to repair a line without first consulting with a qualified technician.

The smaller tanks (20#, 30# and 40#) can be transported in your personal vehicle. These tanks should be secured in the upright position and should never be kept in the vehicle for an extending period of time. 100# cylinder must be delivered by your propane supplier.
